FAQ's
1.  How much editing is required?   Short and Long editing options. (more)

Short Editing, Option 1 Guidelines:-
'| Y |   | N |   You will need a word processor to edit the "1IntellectualFreedom.html" template text.  (This will become your "Opt-In Intellectual Freedom Cover Letter") and,
'
Y |   | N |   You will just print out the 340+ pre APPROVED Authors Master List (some with Grade Levels per page 5 ) for all author alternatives and substitutions. (You will write in Grade Levels as required.)
'
Y |   | N |   You do not need to type in a Addendum #2 List ; and, you will make minor author additions to The List with an ink pen after it is printed.
Long Editing, Option 2 Guidelines:-
'Y |   | N |   You will need a word processor to edit the "1IntellectualFreedom.html" template text.  (This will become your "Opt-In Intellectual Freedom Cover Letter") and,
'Y |   | N |   You want to type in YOUR APPROVED Authors Addendum #2 List to The 340+ Approved Authors Master List and/or have Grade Level Equivalents typed in as an integral part of The Master List. or/ and
'Y |   | N |   Your (or friends) technical experience is sufficient to edit ".html" pages; especially, using the simplified instructions on Editing page 3 for adding YOUR Addendum #2 List (text only) into the "2AuthorsMasterLists.html" page using IE browser and Notepad text editor.  (next FAQ).
Note:  The Parents' efforts i.e. work to monitor the public school curriculum and assignments should be weighted against the home schools or private schools alternatives.

 2.  Why is a list of both UNapproved and Approved Authors required? -  Reasons for a printed list are:
(1.)  A printed list is required: -
-- a.)  To comprehensively cover the large number of authors and multiple compromised lists in the public domain.
-- b.)  To attach the Lists to your printed: `Opt-In + Opt-Out Letter for Intellectual Freedom`, so that both documents become a comprehensive policy for supplying or substituting your Approved Authors.
-- c.)  To provide both documents in writing for yourself and your public school.
-- d.)  So that there are no misunderstandings of what is expected later on either on or off the school campus.
-- e.)  So that the parent(s) need not fear each years new crop of the top "challenged", "banned" or "objectionable" books !

(2.)  IF you need to add an additional personal list of Authors i.e. Addendum #2 besides those provided you can add it and print them all joined together.-
-- a.)  The long UNapproved Authors list requires about 10 pages if printed double sided. In order to keep BOTH lists joined together and the printing to a minimum, it would be desirable to add YOUR Approved Authors Addendum #2 List in the right hand column below our Addendum #1 List.
-- b.)  After adding your list the dual lists of UNapproved and Approved Authors when printed double sided should not be longer than 10 pages. (You would have to add 600+ authors to exceed the 10 pages required for just the UNapproved Authors list.)

(3.)  Once it is printed you can keep The Lists current throughout the school year with an ink pen. (next FAQ).

 3.  Why go to such lengths to emphasize the Authors of Excellence? Because the reading time is short.
It is in the interest of the student`s available reading time to emphasize the all-time, most popular, most Excellent Authors over all the others!

For example:-
-- a.) If a student were to read just 1 title of 10 authors per year of the 47 APPROVED AUTHORS of EXCELLENCE, it would take 4.7 years to read all of those authors!
-- b.) By the same pattern, to read just the 66 titles i.e. all the books in a single bound volume of the Authors of Excellence, it would take 6.6 years.
-- c.) Similarly, if a student were to read 1 title of 10 authors per year of the 295 Addendum #1 Authors, it would take 29.5 years to read each Addendum #1 Author! The available reading time is short.  (next FAQ)

 4.  Do I need to add my own Addendum #2 List?
You need to add your own list IF:-
-- The 340+ Approved Authors already on The List are insufficient.
-- You want to add more authors of your choice than there are blank lines available.
-- You prefer to have the authors typed in rather than added with an ink pen.
-- You want to type in Grade Level Equivalents for each Approved Author. (The 40+ APPROVED AUTHORS of EXCELLENCE have been Graded and appear on the 5GradedAuthors.html page.) (next FAQ)

 5.  How do I make editing and adding Addendum #2 a little easier?    Many helpers make light work.
If you can get some other parents in your public school class to agree:-
-- To the idea that the Opt-In Opt-Out cover letter can be edited with the concept of `Intellectual Freedom`, and NOT `banning`, `challenging` or `censoring` books.
-- To the 340+ Approved Authors already on the List or a sub set thereof. (If 3 parents can agree to 100 of the Approved Authors that might be sufficient for one school year.)
-- To a new list of Addendum Authors created from scratch that will be added.
-- To adding specific Grade Level Equivalents to your Addendum #2 Authors and The other Approved Authors if necessary.
-- To working together on various parts of the project until it is complete.(next FAQ)

6.  How will the local school react to my Intellectual Freedom Letter and Approved Author's List?
It depends on the individual public school personnel and/or school board.  However a good cover letter will do go a long way toward accomodation of your Approved Authors.  But you should:

(1.)  Expect someone in the government school system to try to hinder or obstruct your child's access through the Intellectual Freedom Principal to your Approved Authors, at least until they review it and understand it.
(2.)  Be prepared to resist any hindrances by knowing your rights and knowing who to call in case of excessive obstructions e.g. The Liberty Defenders listed in a separate online documents linked below.
(3.)  Be wary of delays to implementation in excess of 2 weeks.  Because the school board attorney can easily research state statutes and federal case law to determine it's legality.  And 2 weeks is sufficient and reasonable for a teacher(s) to write up a 'rationale' for some of The Approved Authors.  The teacher(s) may already have some pre-written 'rationales' of the Approved Authors from previous experience.

7.  Why only IE browser instructions? - Because of the popularity of the IE Browser: ().
(1.) Because of the popularity of the IE Browser and the Windows OS, the edit technique for the Authors page will use the IE Browser and the Windows default text editor i.e. Notepad.

(2.) The editing technique for the `Intellectual Freedom Opt-In Cover Letter` can use Windows WordPad word processor because you can paste Rich Text File format (if desired) into it from the IE Browser. But you can use your favorite word processor if you want.

(3.) The instructions are detailed but the technique is pretty simple and should be easily transferred to other browsers.

(4.) There are WYSIWYG html editors available; and, if you have used them before, then you might not need these editing notes.  (KompoZer is a nice WYSIWYG html editor for Windows.)

(Hint) Print the editing instructions page if needed.
