RE: Faith, Freedom & Public School Education Workshop.
(em1)
Dear Honorable Larry Ahern
This is a letter to introduce
you to a
new public school program called 'Faith,
Freedom & Educator
Workshop' that hopefully can be brought to all of Florida's
teachers and
administrators in the form of continuing education units
(CEUs). Gateways to Better Education
and the Alliance Defending Freedom
(ADF)
have teamed up for the purpose of educating teachers and
administrators about what is legal and
illegal about "America's default religion" in the classroom and
separation of church and state.
Their Educator Workshop web
page (linked above) has a 3 min. video of teacher and administrator
testimonies as well as their
Seminar Agenda. Gateways' literature indicated that
Texas gives 7 CEUs for the workshop.
Another
reason for granting CEUs for the workshop is
to encourage our county school boards' legal
departments
to be proactive regarding the
rights of our students' religious expression. The local
teachers I have befriended over the
years have never mentioned a school
board attorney's workshop or a religion workshop
based on the Constitutional principles of the 1st Amendment.
I would like our school boards to have the ability to
confront civil liberty
threats and prevent potential separation of church
and state law suits mostly
based on someone feeling "offended" at every
innocent
religious
expression. I believe the Gateway
Education Workshop covering
religious
liberties would highly benefit students, parents, teachers,
school administrators and the community.
I promoted the Educator Workshop to
Pinellas County
School Board on November 17th thinking they would appreciate and
approve a 1st Amendment civil liberty workshop. I don't
know how it will turn out but presenting it to the school board every
year or multiple times a year could become an everlasting task.
I have informally polled some local teachers and
administrators, some of which are retired. There was not an
affirmative answer to any of these questions: Have you ever
attended, been notified of or even heard of a 1st Amendment
workshop?
I would like to know what you
think about Florida awarding CEUs for the workshop, especially since
you are on an education committee.
Sincerely yours,
Richard Klenk,
